I’ll be interested to see feedback from users – it’d be great for overseas use. Personally, I don’t see big value for domestic use when most long distance calls are included in many phone plans – especially with smartphones. As an aside, a friend of mine recently told me her Skype account was hacked. I’ve been nervous to use it ever since. Any idea how often this happens?

@Mary Beth: Skype can be a solution even for domestic calls if you are on the $2.95 unlimited plan. You are able to make and receive calls without it touching your cellular minutes which is why this has been so long in the making. Carriers will lose some revenue from allowing customers to make calls via a data plan.

I use Skype to make international calls and also receive them. I have family in Europe and have setup local numbers for them to reach me at no cost to them and a cost to me of only $30 a year.

As for security, Skype is as secure as any other online site. The issue with hacking is honestly a users fault. They either choose a simple password or fall for a phishing scheme which compromises security.

This is great news but what about all the other users Worlwide who do not use Verizon carrier? This is a real bummer particularly since a bunch of other smartphones can use skype irrespective of their carrier.

Hopefully other carriers will adopt this soon. I know many iPhone users are waiting for Skype over 3G on AT&T
