Many Signs Point To T-Mobile For Home Of Samsung’s Galaxy S

Over the weekend our good friends over at Androidguys.com reported that Samsung’s Galaxy S (also referenced as the i9000) could be headed to T-Mobile as the T959. In more recent years T-Mobile has opted to go with model names such as the Memoir or Behold; however, the company definitely has a history and knack for indexing their devices using letters and numbers. From its announcement during CTIA we’ve all had our speculations and hopes. Since then, I’ve been in contact with some trusted sources in the industry from retail to engineering as well as following the rumor mill. While it may or may not be an exclusive deal, I believe that many signs point to the big pink “T”. Rumors are rumors, I’ll be the first to tell you how quickly things may change from what we hear between now and when the phone’s released. But with Sprint’s EVO 4G and AT&T and Verizon reserving or sharing exclusive rights to the iPhone 4G on the horizon, let’s face it; T-Mobile needs this. Let’s take a look at just a few of the details we’ve gathered so far and let you be the judge.

Now unlike Sprint’s EVO 4G, which was under strict lock and key, Samsung had multiple stations in their mega-booth exhibiting the Galaxy S free for anyone to touch and play with; and play we did. Once we got past the amazing display and the awe factor of it, we searched every option and setting menu for clues as to which carrier the phone may be calling home. We got nothing. Locked, inaccessible, unavailable, you name it they blocked it. That was until of course we made a simple 611 call to customer service; a call which directed us to a friendly greeting by a T-Mobile operating system. Now for the sake of debate this can open up in many directions from it simply being unlocked, unbranded, to a roaming SIM, etc, but I’m keeping it simple and putting my money on T-Mobile.

In addition to this, a very close and trusted source within T-Mobile who works closely with Samsung reps and conducts training seminars on newly released handsets has confirmed information on the release of the Galaxy S in Q4 of this year. It is definitely believed to be releasing with T-Mobile toward the end of the year and round out two separate launches of Android phones for the company between now and then.

Finally, we all know of T-Mobile’s plans to drastically upgrade their network to HSPA+. In fact they are in the middle of the upgrade now and expect to be finished by year’s end. A former colleague of mine who coordinates these projects mentioned that they have recently finished up in Texas completing San Antonio, Houston, and Austin. Next major market is LA which is expected to start in June and finish by November. Two years ago when T-Mobile completed their 3G network, also in LA and around Q4, they celebrated it with the release of their first 3G device and the world’s first ever Android device, the G1. Coincidence? Maybe, maybe not.

How fitting would it be for both Samsung and T-Mobile to have this arrangement? The demand in the market begs for an enriched multimedia experience on faster mobile broadband speeds. With expected speeds of up to 56Mbps on the downlink and 22Mbps uplink, it’s a very logical choice for the Galaxy S and its capabilities to come to T-Mobile. I am a loyal T-Mobile user and definitely would love to see this happen. What are your thoughts? Drop us a line in the comment box!

Man, my next phone decision is going to be tough – I’m leaning towards the EVO 4G but the Galaxy S’ screen is hard to ignore! SICK!

agreed Kenji! That screen is intense. EVO 4G seems like like the more logical choice for you right now unless you plan on switching providers. There’s speculation right now, but my opinion is that the Galaxy S won’t be hitting CDMA. At least not this year
