Next Generation iPhone First Impressions

The boys over at GIZMODO have leaked the first images of what seems to be the next generation iPhone. Some may question the authenticity of the story regarding how they’ve acquired such a top secret Apple product, but we’ll let that debate flourish elsewhere. I’m just interested in the phone itself, the new features, and to see how well Apple’s 4th revision of the iPhone will stand against the next wave of smartphone favorites. With recent reports of BlackBerry OS 6.0 emerging and the unmistakable momentum that Android is producing, the race for supremacy is going to be a tight one.

Just a short time ago Steve Jobs introduced the 4.0 OS to the world and explained the enhancements there. So what’s new with next generation iPhone? While some details may still be under wraps and left obscure, here’s what has been determined so far according to GIZMODO:

  • New form factor; more flush and squared off edges. As well as doing away with the slight curvature on the back.
  • Front facing camera
  • Larger improved camera on the back with flash (expected of course)
  • Plastic backing with a larger removable battery (plastic backing was implemented for improved WiFi connectivity and cell signal)
  • Metallic finish for power and volume buttons
  • SIM has moved from the top of the phone to its side and now uses Micro-SIM.
  • Improved screen quality (although slightly smaller)

My first impression when looking at the photos turned me off a little bit. I am personally not a fan of the squared off edges; just never have been with any phone in the past. Also, it has been said that the curvature in the back with current iPhone 3G/3GS models helped improve comfort when holding the device. In addition to this they’re reporting, although better quality, a smaller screen. Now, sans curvature and slightly diminished screen, I kind of feel like it was a step backward. But that’s just me. Apple is a solid company that obviously knows what they’re doing. Here are just a few photos; take a look for yourself and let us know what you think:

Yeah, I’m not a huge fan either. I guess it’s tough to say where this is in the development process but nothing about this “wowed” me. Most of it was expected, no?

With that said, I’m still getting an EVO…
