Google Play Store Reaches 700,000 Apps

Google has been trailing behind Apple in their application market, but now Google has closed the rather significant gap between the two. The Google Play Store has reached 700,000 applications available across all Android devices.

Last week at Apple’s iPad Mini event they announced that they have 700,000 applications available for download in the App Store, and less than a week later Google announced that they have reached the same amount of applications in the Google Play Store.

While the Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store may have the same amount of applications avaliable for download, Apple still leads the pack with over 35 billion downloads and Apple has a much tougher approval process.

Google Announces The Samsung Nexus 10 And LG Nexus 4

Google’s press event was cancelled today due to Hurricane Sandy, but that didn’t stop the company from making their announcements online as they have unveiled the Samsung Nexus 10 and the LG Nexus 4.

The Samsung Nexus 10 has a 10-inch WQXGA display (2560 x 1600 pixel), a dual-core A15 processor, 2 GB of RAM, 5 megapixel rear camera, 1.9 megapixel front-facing camera, available in 16 GB or 32 GB of internal memory, a 9000 mAh Lithium polymer battery and running Google’s new Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean).

The other device is manufactured by LG, the Nexus 4 has a 4.7-inch WXGA IPS display (1280 x 768 pixel), Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, 8 megapixel rear camera, 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera, available 8 GB or 16 GB of internal memory, 2 GB of RAM, NFC (Android Beam) and also running Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean). The Nexus 4 does lack LTE. This is noted as being due to size and battery constraints.

Both the Nexus 10 and Nexus 4 will be available through Google’s Play Store starting November 13th in United States and other countries. The Nexus 10 will be priced at $399 (16 GB) and $499 (32 GB) Wi-Fi version only.

The Nexus 4 will be available for $299 (16GB) or $349 (32 GB) unlocked in the Play Store, or if T-Mobile is your carrier the 16 GB versions will go for $199.99 on qualifying two-year agreement starting November 14th.

Day 3 Of 25 Cent Android Apps

Apple Posts List Of Alternative Map Apps

Following Apple CEO Tim Cook’s open letter to iOS users, Apple has updated the App Store with a list of recommended map applications as you can see above.

Head over to the App Store and grab yourself an iOS 6 Maps alternative. As always we recommend Scout by TeleNav especially as it currently includes a free year of turn by turn voice navigation.

Google’s YouTube App Arrives Before Launch Of iOS 6

Just in time for iOS 6, the official YouTube app is now available for download in the Apple App Store for the iPod Touch and iPhone. In case you haven’t heard yet, Apple did not pre-install a YouTube application with iOS 6 so Google released their own. The YouTube engineers are working on an optimized version of the application for Apple’s iPad to arrive in the coming months, which is a let down.

The new application seems to work faster than the native YouTube app provided by Apple and the searches seem to be much more refined delivering you exactly what you are looking for without all the extra clutter.

You can follow this link to download the new YouTube app and give it a try yourself.

Adobe To Disable New Installs Of Flash Player Tomorrow

Tomorrow Adobe is ending Flash Player support on Android devices. We all knew this day was coming as Adobe made it clear back in November of 2011 that Flash on mobile devices was a challenge they no longer wanted to conquer.

If you currently have Flash Player installed on your Android device you have nothing to worry about. Adobe plans on some maintenance updates as well as security fixes as required going forward. If you don’t have it installed yet and want it, be sure to tap on the Play Store today and download it.

Honestly I feel this is a major step in the right direction for website viewing from a mobile device. Flash never worked well at delivering a smooth mobile experience as it was built around using a mouse and a large amount of memory. Now we just need web developers to take the time to build rich media environments without relying on Flash so much.

Are you worried about the lack of Flash on your device? Let us know in comments.
