Snapchat Clone Puffchat Insecure And So Is Its CEO

scripts

With every great app successes you see people trying to ride the wave and carve off a piece of the pie for themselves. That seems to be the case with Puffchat. This is a messenger app, that prior to today I didn’t even know existed. I found out about the app when Puffchat CEO Micheal Suppo decided to threaten security researcher Thomas Hedderwick for disclosing that the Puffchat security model was more smoke and mirrors than an actual secure app and provided proof.

Thomas had attempted by a number of means to contact Puffchat and let them know about the issues prior to disclosing.

In the interest of responsible disclosure I did try and contact the dev multiple ways, I was either ignored or not replied to and I feel users deserve to know what’s happening with their data. It’s only saving grace is that it appears to delete the message logs if you manually clear your feed, still a far way off being secure.

How insecure is the app? According to Thomas, there really isn’t anything. Read more

Apple Posts iOS 7 Adoption Stats

ios_7_logo

Apple updated their developer support center with the latest stats on iOS 7 adoption. As of December 1st, 2013, 74% of all iOS devices are running iOS 7. 22% are running iOS 6 and 4% are running an earlier version. This puts iOS 7 in-line to be the fastest adopted OS in Apples history. iOS 6 took six months to get to 83% and iOS 7 will surely surpass that milestone.

This fast adoption rate makes life easier for developers. They can develop new software with the latest and greatest features without having to incorporate support for legacy operating systems.

Android has a much harder time with user adoption. This isn’t because of a lack of interest. Android device manufactures  must produce a specific version of the OS for each device and carrier. After that is done it has to be tested by the carrier before the device manufacturer can push it out to their users.

Here are current Android adoption rates:

KitKat 1.1%

Jelly Bean 54.5%

Ice Cream Sandwich 18.2%

Gingerbread 24.1%

We will see a big jump in KitKat adoption as new devices are released over the next few months.

Spotify To Launch Free Mobile Music Service

spotify_music_banner

Spotify, which has been one of my goto sources for music, is planning on moving their computer based offerings to mobile devices. Spotify has offered mobile access but for a monthly fee. The Wall Street Journal is reporting they will be offer a mobile version, ad supported, at no cost, much like the computer based version.

If this all pans out Spotify mobile users will be able to enjoy unlimited radio style listening based off their likes, much like Pandora and some access to songs on demand. Licensing the songs on demand is what took almost a year to achieve. Rights holders and Spotify had to come up with a formula to pay for the music but still make a profit. Which can be tricky in this industry.

Currently Spotify has 6 million paying subscribers and 20 million active users, with a library topping 20 million songs. We will know more next week when Spotify holds their official event in New York.

This is a smart move for Spotify with the introduction of so many competitors such as iTunes Radio and Google’s Play Music, they need a competitive edge to pull in listeners.

If you want to check out Spotify’s offerings follow the appropriate link below. We will follow-up after the press announcement next week.

Copy – 20GB Cloud Storage For Free

copyhomepage

I know many mobile users struggle with storage space on their smartphones. I have run into this especially taking pictures. I have written about Dropbox in the past.  I used it for quickly accessible storage, but the free Dropbox account starts out with only 2GB of data for free and a maximum of 16GB through referrals.

Copy has entered the mix and for a limited time they are offering 15GB to start and 5GB for each referral you bring in. You can quickly get yourself 100GB of free, non expiring cloud storage. While Copy is being very generous during their launch phase you need to keep in mind all the features you may be use to in Dropbox may not be in Copy. The biggest thing missing for me, is that the iPhone version does not offer an automated upload of your camera roll. You can still choose photos to upload but you must select them. I have actually turned this into a benefit as I now choose pictures I really want to upload verses everything. Keeping my photo library much cleaner. The Android version does offer the option to upload all your photos.

I suggest you give Copy a try. You have nothing to lose and starting with 20GB of storage I bet you will find a use.

Signup via our link and get 20GB of storage to start. You will start with 15GB during signup and then once installed on a mobile device or computer you will be credited the extra 5GB.

Quick Review: Energi Sliding Power Case for iPhone 5/5s

iPhone’s today are essentially mini computers, and that kind of information and potential at our fingertips everyday has a price. The price on a iPhone is not only data, but more importantly power. Battery power to be more specific. Every device comes with a predetermined amount of power in the battery. That juice has to last to get the user through their day. A day of making phone calls, sending a receiving texts and emails, surfing the web, creating documents, listening to music, watching videos, etc, etc, etc. We use our phones now more than ever, and that use is causing our batteries to drain quick.

The TYLT Energi Sliding Power Case is a great solution to the power problem many of us are facing with our iPhone. Unlike other battery case solutions on the market, the Energi Sliding Power Case comes with two separate pieces that essentially allow the user to have two different case options. One simple lightweight case, and another case that includes a portable battery pack.

TYLY Energi Sliding Power CaseThe Energi Sliding Power Case has a 2500 mAh battery which claims to give you an extra 9 hours talk time on your iPhone. For comparison, the Mophie Juice Pack Plus comes with a 2100 mAh battery, and is the largest battery case Mophie offers. The price for the Energi Sliding Power Case is just $99.99 as opposed to the $119.95 for the Mophie Juice Pack Plus.

Quick Review: Otterbox iPhone 5/5s Wallet Case

Otterbox Commuter WalletScreen shot 2013-11-17 at 8.45.09 PM

Do you ever get tired of having to carry a wallet and your cell phone? Do you wish there was a case that could hold your phone and your vital items from your wallet? Do you wish I’d stop asking these stupid questions and just get on with it???

Introducing the Otterbox iPhone 5/5s Wallet Case. It is the latest and greatest for the case making people at Otterbox. It combines great protection with the ability to carry around a few of the important cards from your wallet. This is a multilayer case that gives your device some solid protection and offers a slide out tray on the rear that can hold up to three cards of your choice.

I found that this case is very useful when you are wanting to travel light, but yet have the needed items with you. I was able to carry my drivers license, debit card, and a credit card with no problems. The tray compartment adds a little bulk to the case, but it’s not too bad, and definitely not as much as the battery case I usually have on my phone.

The case does not come with a built in screen protector like the Defender Series cases, but you can easily apply a screen protector of your choice on your phone. Overall I think this is a good case and it’s very useful, but I’m not so sure it’s worth the $44.95 asking price. In my opinion, a price tag somewhere in the low $30′s would seem more reasonable.

BlackBerry Messenger Making Its Way To iOS and Android

BBM_iphone_android

There have been rumors for at least 5 years that BlackBerry Messenger would make its way to additional platforms. Today the rumors have been squashed as BlackBerry has officially announced that BBM will be coming to Android and iOS this summer.

Minimum system requirements will be iOS 6 or higher for Apple devices and Android 4.0 or higher for Android devices.

The downloadable BBM app will allow for group chats up to 30 people per group, offer the same privacy controls already available on the BlackBerry including Read and Delivery notifications as well two-way opt in to become friends with someone.

Currently 60 million people actively use BBM sending over 10 billion messages per day. This may be an app that actually gives WhatsApp a run for its money.

When a release date is announced we will provide additional details.
