Apple Announces 128GB iPad 4

It what seemed to be hasty decision without a trip to a keynote event, Apple introduced their latest iPad 4 with 128GBs of storage via a press release. While 128GB is overkill for most people it does have a place in the market. More and more industries are switching to paperless solutions and the iPad is a perfect fit. Both designers working with large image files and doctors with MRI and Cat scans will benefit from the increased storage.

While most users can get away with their data in the cloud some people just don’t want to go that route. While I do use iCloud I have no interested in storing 128GBs in it because honestly Apple has a hard enough time restoring 2GBs.

The new iPad will be available starting February 5 for $799 for WiFi only and $929 for WiFi + Cellar. Sprint has confirmed that they will be carrying the new iPad at launch.

Sprint Adding 28 New Cities To Their 4G LTE Network

Sprint has announced that the company will be expanding their 4G LTE network in 28 additional cities this month. The new cities are part of Sprint’s Network Vision strategy to combine multiple networks into one.

Customer will be able to experience faster data speeds that enable instant Web access, better signal strength when making a call or using the Web, fewer dropped calls and improved voice quality with less static or background noise.

“We’re committed to providing improved 3G and 4G LTE as quickly as possible, and keeping our customers informed as to when and where they can experience the new network’s superior performance and speed,” said Bob Azzi, senior vice president-Network, Sprint. “Our customers depend on their mobile devices as their primary source of communication, business connectivity and entertainment. We’re delivering all of that functionality at a very competitive price.”

Sprint Expands Their 4G/ LTE Network To 11 More Markets

Sprint has announced another expansion of their 4G/ LTE network to 11 new markets. This brings Sprint’s total 4G/ LTE markets to 43.

“We are pleased to deliver our new 4G LTE network to more Sprint customers,” said Bob Azzi, senior vice president-Network, Sprint. “Whether someone uses 4G LTE for personal or professional needs, they will find that Sprint’s new 4G LTE network is performing extremely well. Customers should find it consistent, reliable and fast.”

Sprint To Acquire 20 MHz Of Spectrum & Customers From U.S. Cellular

Sprint has announced that they have entered into an agreement with U.S. Cellular, where the company will acquire PCS spectrum and 585,000 customers. This deal was reached with a cash payment of $480 million. This will allow Sprint to speed up its rollout of LTE service nationwide.

“This transaction will enable us to strengthen our business and become a more robust competitor, “said Dan Hesse, Sprint’s CEO. “Acquiring this spectrum will significantly increase Sprint’s network capacity and improve the customer experience in several important Midwest markets including Chicago and St. Louis. We welcome the new customers in these markets and look forward to providing them with Sprint’s unique combination of unlimited plans, an iconic device portfolio and unmatched customer service.”

With the agreement, Sprint will acquire 20 MHz of PCS spectrums in the 1900 MHz range. This of course requires regulatory approval. The deal is expected to close in mid-2013.

Sprint And LG Launching More 4G/ LTE Devices

Sprint is expanding their 4G/ LTE devices as the company has announced availability of the LG Mach and pre-orders for the LG Optimus G have started today, November 1st.

The LG Mach will be available starting November 11th for $99.99 with a qualifying two-year agreement. The Mach has a 4 inch WVGA display, runs Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, 5 megapixel camera with flash, 0.3 megapixel front-facing camera and full QWERTY slide out keyboard.

 

The LG Optimus G will go for $199.99 with a qualifying two-year agreement with pre-orders going on now. The Optimus G has a 4.7 inch WXGA display, 1.5 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor, a fantasy 13 megapixel rear camera with advanced features, 1.3 front-facing camera and also runs Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich).

Sprint’s First 4G / LTE Tablet Lands November 11th

Sprint will be offering their very first 4G / LTE tablet, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 starting November 11th. The Android powered tablet has a 10.1-inch display, a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor, 3 megapixel rear camera and a front-facing VGA camera.

The Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 will go for $549.99 (excluding taxes and surcharges) and if you have a smartphone on Sprint’s network you can add the tablet to your account for a special discount rate plan that includes 1 GB of data for $15 monthly or $10 for 100 MB of data.

For limited time as well, Sprint will be waiving the activation fee on their 3G / 4G LTE tablets. Keep in mind LTE coverage from Sprint is still very limited, so keep that in mind if LTE is a deciding factor for you.

Sprint Is First To Push Out Jelly Bean To Galaxy S III Users

If you’re a Galaxy S III user on Sprint N, you’ll be happy to know that the company has started pushing out updates for Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean). Sprint is the first U.S. carrier to offer the upgrade to Galaxy S III users. Notoriously GSM (AT&T / T-Mobile) customers get them first.

An OTA (Over The Air) updates have began rolling out to users today. When your Galaxy receives the update it will automatically download, once it’s finished you will be prompted to install the update. It will take a few minutes to install and you won’t be able to use your Galaxy S III until the installation is complete.

If you haven’t received your update yet, hold tight Sprint hasn’t forgotten about you. These updates go out in waves to not overload the servers.

Sprint Expands Push-To-Talk To More Android Devices

Sprint’s Direct Connect, “Push-to-Talk” is already available on multiple phones like the Kyocera Rise, but just recently the company has announced that more Android devices like the LG Optimus Elite and others will gain the ability to download the app.

“Sprint Direct Connect Now expands access to next-generation push-to-talk functionality,” said Michael Wallace, senior vice president and general manager of Qualcomm Internet Services. “This offering, leveraging Qualcomm’s IP-based push-to-talk platform, enables functionality and device selection ideal for a broader base of consumers.”

Sprint Direct Connect Now key features:

  • Interoperable with Nextel Direct Connect and Sprint Direct Connect
  • Group Connect calls up to 21 participants
  • Call alerts to notify others you want to talk without interrupting
  • Convenient touchscreen controls
  • Display contacts image for speaker
  • Synchronizes contacts with device’s address book
  • Creates favorites for most contacted Direct connect contacts

Sprint Gains Control of Clearwire

Today the on going struggle between Sprint and Clearwire may finally have come to an end, not in the way Clearwire had hoped however. Sprint has been unable to dictate Clearwire’s future up until now because they only held 48 percent of voting power in the company. Sprint found a way to secure the necessary voting power they needed to have the say within the company.

Sprint has been working with Eagle River Holdings to obtain their stock in Clearwire. Eagle River Holdings currently has a 2.3 percent stake in the company. Craig McCaw the company’s chief executive also owns 2.3 percent personally. The companies reached an agreement today selling almost 31 million of its 34 million Class A Common shares to Sprint as well as all of its Class B shares.

This transaction will cost Sprint $100 million dollars, but will give them the voting power they need to ultimately control Clearwire.

The Japanese based company Softbank, reported that they wanted Sprint to obtain Clearwire prior to agreeing to the acquisition of the 70 percent stake in Sprint for $20.1 billion.

Clearwire had the goal of establishing a fully realized national wireless network, after a multi-billion dollar investment by Sprint, Intel, Google and Comcast the plan faded and no nationwide network was established. All of the investors, with the exception of Sprint, bought their way out of Clearwire for fear that it was a failing company which they did not want to be partnered with.

Softbank To Acquire 70% Stake In Sprint

We know Sprint was in discussions with Softbank, but according to the Business Insider the companies have come to an agreement. Softbank will take a 70 percent stake in Sprint at the cost of $20 billion USD.

$8 billion of shares will come directly from Sprint holdings and the remaining $12 billion will be purchased from current Sprint stockholders. The deal should be set in stone with Softbank having an official statement tomorrow (Monday).

Is this good news for Sprint or bad? It will be interesting to see how this plays out in the long term. This may be the breath of fresh air they have needed.

Sprint In Discussions With Softbank

Sprint has put out a brief press release that the company has “Confirmed Discussions with Softbank on a Possible Transaction”. No real details were released by Sprint but Sprint did mention, “Such a transaction could involve a change of control of Sprint”.

Sprint doesn’t plan on making any further comments on the situation unless and until an agreement is reached.

Softbank is looking into a two-thirds stake in Sprint Nextel for $1 trillion yen ($12.8 billion U.S.). Sprint’s shares went up 14.88% this morning to $5.79, which brought the company market value to about $17.2 billion.

There is a lot on Sprint’s hands right now, as the company was interested in bidding on MetroPCS. This may turn into a long process if Sprint agrees to the investment and there are many regulatory hurdles to overcome.
